What does Zero Waste Mean?

Waste free means that all single use items are recyclable or compostable and food waste is diverted to compost rather than trash.

This year, Green Hudson volunteers are monitoring 3 recycling stations that will collect aluminum and #1 Plastic.

Biodegradable Products institute
Search for products that meet their seal of approval.


BPI-CERTIFIED COMPOSTABLE, shall mean certified by the
Biodegradable Products Institute to meet the American Society for Testing and
Materials International Standards D6400 or D6868, as those standards may be
amended. As of January 1, 2020 BPI certification requires that materials also contain
no more than 100 ppm total fluorine and no intentionally added fluorinated chemicals.


Ask your current supplier – they have biodegradable products.

Hudson Fest Zero Waste Timeline

2022:

Green Hudson volunteers are monitoring 3 recycling stations that will collect aluminum and #1 Plastic.

2023:

We are asking vendors to minimize plastic straws by only providing them upon request.

We also ask vendors to consider cups, utensils, and flatware that are compostable or made of #1 (PET) plastic that are not white or clear. Drinks should be serve from aluminum cans, bottles, #1 (PET) cups, or compostable insulated cups for hot beverages.

Green Hudson will host composting and recycling stations at 3 locations.  Green Hudson will add glass recycling

2024:

Green Hudson will ask the Chamber of Commerce to officially endorse the Zero Waste ’26 proposal and require  compostable or recyclable cups, utensils, and flatware.

2025:

Green Hudson will work with the Chamber of Commerce to ensure that all single use items are recyclable or compostable.  Green Hudson will expand compost and recycling to 6 locations.

2026:

All trash stations will have recycle, compost, and trash.

All single use items distributed at the event will be recyclable or compostable.
